Chocolate-Dipped Rice Krispies Treats (video)
These are the original Rice Krispies squares we all know and love, but made extra special dipped in chocolate and topped with sprinkles for more flavor and fun. They are quick and easy to make and great for kids to help with. My kids love Rice Krispies cereal. There is something about that snap, crackle, and pop that amuses them. I like turning my Rice Krispies cereal into Rice Krispies squares. I think it’s just one of the favorites we all remember from when we were a kid. However, I decided to make them extra special this time with some chocolate and sprinkles. Because hey, everything is more fun and tasty with chocolate and sprinkles. Rice Krispies squares were invented back in 1939 by the Kellogg Company, and have been popular ever since. I’d like to say bravo to the two ladies that came up with the idea. Who would have thought cereal and marshmallow would go so well together? Smart, and the recipe couldn’t be any easier. All it is is marshmallow melted with a little bit of butter and Rice Krispies cereal.
Why this recipe is so great:
It only takes 5 ingredients and 30 minutes to make these treats from start to finish. It’s so easy, even kids can help. You can also customize it to suit any occasion by using festive sprinkles to match the season, like orange and black sprinkles with eye candies for Halloween, or red and green sprinkles for Christmas.
How to make chocolate-dipped Rice Krispies treats:
(the ingredient amounts are listed in the printable recipe card further below)
- Melt the butter and marshmallows in a large pot. Stir in the Rice Krispies until evenly coated.
- Press the mixture into a 9×13″ pan lined with wax paper.
- Let cool and cut into 2×2″ squares.
- Melt the chocolate over a double boiler.
- Dip each square into the melted chocolate.
- Top with sprinkles and let stand until chocolate hardens.
Expert tips:
- Use fresh marshmallows because they melt easier and are soft and gooey, which is ideal for Rice Krispies squares. Old marshmallows get dry and melt into a big glob which also makes them hard to mix into the cereal.
- Melt the butter and marshmallows over low heat to avoid burning the mixture. It will take a few more minutes, but it will also prevent the Rice Krispies squares from getting hard and you’ll end up with soft and chewy treats.
- Butter the pan to keep the wax paper in place and butter the spatula to prevent the treats from sticking to the spatula when you are pressing the mixture evenly into the pan.
- Use a large sharp kitchen knife for nice clean-cut squares. For more tips, visit TheKitchn.com

For the quantity of ingredients for me it wasnt enough to fill a 9×13 pan. They were too thin so I made 1 1/2 for the pan which made a nice thicker size.
Instead of cutting them first & dipping each of them in chocolate. Cant you just pour the chocolate over the entire pan full of treats. Sprinkle with topping and then cut them into bars?
Yes, you can do that as well:) Enjoy and happy holidays!
How long will they be good kept in the refrigerator
Hi Nancy,
You do not need to store these Rice Krispies treats in the fridge. You can store them in an airtight container with a sheet of wax paper in between each layer at room temperature for 3-5 days.

Rice Krispie cookies are John’s favorite. I think instead of the 3 tbl of butter I use about a stick LOL! Your treats are decorated so adorably!
Thanks Julie and thanks for stopping by. Hugs:)
This might sound like a stupid question, but what’s the difference??
