Healthy Chocolate Banana Bread
This is a moist, flavorful, and naturally sweet chocolate banana bread made with whole wheat flour, coconut oil, Greek yogurt, and honey. It is totally healthy and absolutely delicious!
You won’t believe this amazing chocolate banana bread is only made with healthy ingredients, yet is tastes like a chocolate cake. My toddler actually refers to it as chocolate cake, and trust me he is the world’s pickiest eater and is pretty blunt when it comes to his opinions about food.
The bread is made with whole wheat flour instead of white. I used coconut oil instead of butter, and I sweetened it with honey instead of granulated sugar. These are all much healthier alternatives to the traditional ingredients. There is also Greek yogurt in the recipe, for added moisture and protein.
The texture is soft and fluffy, almost cake-like. The taste is sweet, but not too sweet, and it’s fruity and chocolatey. It’s great for breakfast, as a snack or packed in school lunches as a healthy treat. It’s also a great way to use up over-ripe bananas because we all have those. Why is that?
Anyway, if you are looking for a tasty treat that you can feel good about, then look no further, this is it!

Description
This is a moist, flavorful, and naturally sweet chocolate banana bread made with whole wheat flour, coconut oil, Greek yogurt, and honey.
Ingredients
- 1 & 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 tbsp melted coconut oil
- 1 cup mashed over-ripe bananas (about 2 large)
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F and grease a 9×5″ glass baking pan.
- In a large bowl, toss together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted coconut oil with the mashed bananas. Then add the egg, greek yogurt, honey and vanilla, mix well. Slowly add to the dry ingredients and stir together until just combined.
- Spoon into prepared glass baking pan and bake to 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Notes
If using a metal baking pan, I recommend lining it with parchment paper to prevent the edges from over-baking.
Beautiful thanks for clear instructions like how many cups of bananas I should have . I used 2+ bananas a make one cup. I blended and sifted rolled oats and used maple syrup instead. Thanks for the fabulous recipe , delicious 😀
You’re very welcome and so happy you liked it!
This recipe was terrific. It was super moist with a tight crumb which made it super easy to slice and it was good for a few days without drying out.
I did make it with all purpose flour and used monk fruit sweetener (tastes, looks and feels like regular sugar) instead of the honey and it was really good.
This was a nice option to the same old banana bread we always make.
Thanks so much for the great recipe!
You’re very welcome, Brenda! I’m glad you liked it so much. Enjoy and have a great day!
Can I just use regular pastry flour instead of whole wheat? Thanks
Yes, you can use regular pastry flour or even all-purpose flour. Thank you for your question and I hope you enjoy the bread!
This is the second recipe of yours that I tried and I have to say…they are amazing! 👌🏼 Right amount of flavor and moisture, and not overly sweet. AND it’s (semi-) healthy. Thank you little sweet baker. You have me as a loyal follower now

This banana bread tastes absolutely delightful 🙂 I baked it earlier today since I was in the baking mood and your instructions were very descriptive and helpful. Thank you!
Just made this today and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it came out! And to think there is no butter or refined sugars! The only change I made was subbing out the coconut oil for olive oil. Thanks for a wholesome banana bread recipe that is also delicious!
You’re welcome Brianna and thank you for your kind words. Enjoy and have a lovely evening:)

Gorgeous… so much lately on coconut oil being a real healthy ingredient? In the past it wasn’t so. Love all your ingredients, will definitely be trying this. Not sure I’ve seen whole wheat pastry flour though. I have only regular wholewheat flour.
Coconut oil has definitely become main stream. Its nice that there are so much more healthy ingredients and options readily available now. The regular whole wheat flour should work fine. Thanks for stopping by Loretta , hugs:)
